Title:

Area Manager

Infineum Site:

Köln, Germany

My Work

As Area Manager I’m responsible for everything that is linked to running the polyisobutylene and poly normal butylene (PIB/PNB), and the waste water unit in Köln. This includes all health, safety and environment (HSE)-relevant aspects, legal liability, and leadership and management of production issues. The area of interaction varies from operations, maintenance and logistics to manufacturing technology, procurement, production planning, etc. Additionally, I’m leading/working on local teams such as the Process Safety Measurement team, management team, quality/ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation), team, etc.

My Day

My day usually starts with talking with my team to check the unit data of the previous night, followed by attending the daily production meeting. Everyday is different. Highlights are when you see things are getting done, issues getting resolved, and people growing and developing with the tasks you give them. I really enjoy working with people. This can be locally or internationally, peer to peer or with different hierarchy levels.

My Path

I started working for Infineum in 2005 as a Contact Engineer for the PIB/PNB unit in Köln. Right from the beginning I was interested in obtaining broader knowledge, mainly about the other production units in Köln, and later outside the production perspective. So, in time I got the opportunity to work as Contact Engineer for the other units. Recently, I had the opportunity and accepted the challenge to become area manager in Köln.

Responsibility grows naturally after you have shown that you can handle it. In my case, I’ve worked hard and my supervisors increased my responsibility stepwise. Additionally, you will always get the chance to join a team or even to take leadership of a small team to show your commitment. Or you can take on additional tasks if management asks for volunteers or needs support.

My Take

Infineum combines many positive aspects, such as

  • a high level of communication among departments, functions and sites in and across all hierarchy levels.
  • opportunities to learn multi-disciplinary activities outside the area you are trained in by your apprenticeship or studies
  • interacting with nice and supportive people
If you are passionate about your career and like to interact with people, Infineum is a good company to work for. Sooner or later you will work with other departments or functions and can get the chance to look farther and think outside the box. Additionally, due to our rigour and setting of priorities the organisation has remained healthy.
