Fuel Borne Catalysts (FBCs) reduce the temperature at which soot burns. The FBC is added to diesel fuel either by additising bulk fuel or by use of an on-board reservoir that adds it to the vehicle fuel tank or the fuel lines. The FBC is burnt with the fuel in the engine and is carried into the DPF along with the particulate matter (PM) where it catalyses the reaction of soot with oxygen in the exhaust gas. The FBC lowers the temperature at which the reaction occurs from over 600°C to around 350°C depending on engine emissions.
