Marine diesel cylinder lubricants Large slow speed crosshead engines require both a cylinder lubricant and a system oil. This is because with this type of engine the crankcase is separated from the combustion zone by a suitable sealing gland effectively dividing the engine into two parts. This is particularly useful in large marine engines which are usually run on low-cost residual fuel of high sulphur content. Cylinder Oil Lubricant - injected directly into the cylinder as fresh lubricant to control corrosive and mechanical wear. To counteract the acid attack and deposit formation that would result from the combustion of such fuels, a very alkaline cylinder oil is injected directly into the cylinder liner. The piston-rod gland seals off any blowby, unburned fuel and cylinder oil residue from the main crankcase lubricating oil. System Oil – As the crankcase is isolated from the combustion zone, this oil can be of a mild detergent type, designed specifically for optimum crankshaft and crosshead lubrication and have a longer service life. This oil lubricates the main bearings, crosshead bearings and camshafts, cools the piston undercrown and protects the crankcase against corrosion.
