Trunk piston engine oils

Trunk Piston Engines operate at medium speed in a four stroke mode. Although trunk piston engines are widely used in marine applications, they are also used extensively in land-based power generation.

Modern heavy-fuelled diesel engines are characterized by extremely low oil consumption levels (down to 0.2g/kWh and below). This trend means that residues of combustion reach high levels of concentration within the lubricant, requiring a high performance lubricant additive system. Using low quality oil leads to the formation of ‘black sludge’ (due to the agglomeration of Ashphaltenes), which sticks to the fuel injection pumps and which may form deposits on the piston undercrown leading to piston seizure.

Excellent base number (TBN) retention and viscosity control performed by Infineum Marine lubricant additives are becoming more and more important as operators look to reduce lube-oil top up. The use of poor quality lubricants leads to loss of TBN and poor viscosity control, meaning that oil condemning limits are soon reached, implying draining and replenishment with new lubricant.

The increasing use of environmentally friendly low-sulphur fuels can lead to the build-up of lacquer on cylinder liners. This is a result of the polymerisation of fuel components that would normally remain soluble in a sulphur rich environment.

Whatever the type of fuel, tight control of operating costs leads to the demand for low maintenance solutions. Trouble-free operation of centrifuge purifiers is a must, as is a lubricant that is able to meet scheduled drain intervals.
