Infineum is a specialty chemicals company whose purpose is to create a sustainable future through innovative chemistry. A joint venture between Shell and Exxon Mobil, Infineum is one of the world leaders in the formulation, manufacturing and marketing of petroleum additives for lubricants and fuels with operations and production facilities worldwide.

With a global emphasis on combatting climate change, automotive manufacturers are pushing the boundaries when it comes to engine design. The tightening of emissions targets set out by government legislature means that engine design is continuously evolving and consequently the lubricants that we use in our engines need to evolve as well. Infineum is one of the world’s leading formulators, manufacturers and marketers of fuel and lubricant additives and we have a key role to play in improving the fuel efficiency of tomorrow’s engines.
We are seeking an experienced Synthetic Polymer Technologist to join our growing Technology function to help synthesise the lubricant additives of tomorrow. Our Technologist roles are diverse, engaging and challenging, with the possibility to choose the path that’s right for you. Use your knowledge to take on a range of technical challenges and make a meaningful contribution to the business through the development of new additives.

What the role entails:

Working as part of a dedicated team, you will design and synthesize novel compounds aimed at solving key challenges, both current and future, within lubricant additive technology. The role entails being the polymer focal point within the team, advising on synthetic approaches, reaction set ups and stewarding the development of polymeric materials from gram to multiple kg scale.

Infineum takes pride in investing in its people and this role offers excellent, continued opportunities for personal development and career progression. There will be opportunities for supervising, coaching and training junior chemists as well as utilising external outsourcing relationships to further your research. You will also develop your project management skills as you learn to lead multiple workstreams whilst keeping key stakeholders informed.

Additionally, we encourage our employees to broaden their skill set by undertaking roles in safety, quality, inclusivity and outreach.

The applicant will ideally have:
  • Significant experience in the use of (controlled) radical polymerisation techniques and post-polymerisation modification approaches
  • Additional experience in an area of cationic, anionic, emulsion and/or condensation polymerisation is desirable
  • Enthusiasm to pursue wider responsibilities within the group (e.g. safety, quality, inclusivity etc.) in order to progress their personal development.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. Infineum operates a flexible working policy and will consider requests for reduced hours, part-time working or job share.
