Position Summary:

The Marine Field Test Engineer holds a pivotal role in the Global Engineering Group, it reports into the Marketing and Technology business unit. The role reports directly to a Senior Engineer. This group delivers a high quality and innovative service to Technology providing product performance testing and engineering solutions. Technology has responsibility for the development and deployment of new lubricants for our customers – the oil majors.

A critical part of this lubricant development process is to demonstrate the performance of these technologies in the real world. This is done on board the vessels, and the tests are designed to stress the lubricant in severe operating conditions and harsh environments. The results are then shared with the engine manufacturers (OEM) and our customers.

The Marine Field Test Engineer is responsible for designing and organising these activities from interpreting Technologies needs through to the engine inspection and reporting. You will work in a strong collaborative environment with the OEMs of marine engines (2-stroke and 4-stroke). You will manage field trials operation, being an advisor for internal customers. You will be deeply involved in Marine products development and will dispose of a high visibility across the organisation.

Key Outputs: What we can expect from you
  • Work closely with all internal stakeholders (Technology, Innovation, Line Management) & external customers (OEMs, maintenance companies, 3rd parties) to coordinate field tests
  • Proactively search for new vessels to test Infineum technologies
  • Administer the field trials, maintaining close control over the operation and used oil analysis monitoring
  • Perform on-board inspection to report engine oil performance
  • Provide technical report of the outcomes of field trials to the Development Technologist and OEMs
  • Provide diagnostic and root cause analysis support for internal and external field test owners

  • Leadership skills as related to the supervision of engine dismantling & inspection activities performed by the dealership and fleet service technicians
A successful candidate is likely to have:
  • A degree in marine engineering, and/or with strong experience in marine at a shipping company, the navy/military or at a marine engine OEM (engineering, maintenance, repair)
  • Understanding of ship systems of large marine Diesel engines (2T & 4T)
  • Ability and flexibility to attend on-board inspections (scheduled and short notice)
  • Excellent communication skills and be able to bridge the gap between Engineering and Chemistry
  • Able to build strong relationships with external customers
  • Demonstrate management and coordination of complex activities with issue-solving skills. Can deliver quality work with few guidelines (independent work skills required)
  • Ability to work in an ambiguous environment, with different cultures and demonstrate a strong commitment to safety
  • Some experience in engine component rating, measurement techniques and oil and fuel analytical techniques
