Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) skills are crucial for our business capabilities and success, as well as for productivity and sustainability. Our future workforce will depend on more young people expressing an interest in STEM, being encouraged to take STEM subjects and entering STEM careers. To help address this challenge we developed our Schools Outreach Programme in 2017 with a group of colleagues volunteering to organise and deliver STEM outreach work with local schools.
Action on our Schools Outreach Programme includes:
Providing children and young people with engaging opportunities to experience science subjects to demonstrate careers in STEM, including:
- Partnered with STEM.org to train 25 volunteer STEM Ambassadors, delivering workshops, experiments and career discussions to schools in the UK, including Larkmead Secondary School and Rush Common Primary School in Abingdon and King Alfred’s in Wantage.
- Hosting interactive site visits at our Manufacturing Plant in Vado Ligure, Italy for local students to gain an insight into Infineum and see the range of career opportunities available.
- Supporting a number of environmental project programmes impacting students, teachers and community members in Elizabeth and Linden, New Jersey in the USA.
- Delivering a programme of initiatives aimed at helping support the development and wellbeing of local children living near our site in Rio, Brazil - such as organising a weekly sports club, hosting a recreational holiday camp and partnering with local schools to help fund building repairs and maintenance.
