The impact of advanced additives

Advanced additive chemistry gives engine manufacturers freedom to design more efficient engines while allowing the oil to solve the resultant lubricant challenges.

Improving Fuel Economy

Advanced lubricants can have a number of impacts on the fuel efficiency of the vehicle. The additive systems are important to powertrain efficiency, both as direct actors and as a critical enabler.

Direct impacts: the lubricant enables a reduction in engine frictional losses which reduce the engine fuel consumption. This can be achieved mainly through changes to the lubricant viscosity (additives are then critical to maintain durability performance like wear protection) or through the use of friction modifiers within the additive system.

Indirect impacts: enabling changes in engine technology with a fuel economy or emissions reducing effect (e.g. reduced SAPS level for compatibility with after-treatment systems)

Oil Drain Intervals

Infineum is developing additives which allow OEMs to extend their recommended Oil Drain Intervals on a lubricant enabling them to reduce waste and maximise asset utilisation. This is achieved by additives providing improved durability performance, especially oxidation control and wear protection throughout the oil drain interval. Such extended drain products are often referred to as “Long Life” lubricants.

Protecting Aftertreatment Systems

Aftertreatment systems are essential to maintaining clean air. They reduce, remove or significantly reduce byproducts of combustion including particulate matter, hydrocarbons, NOx.

Aftertreatment systems are complex and finely tuned. As a result, they are subject to reduced efficiency, or even damage over time. Engine oils are precisely formulated with additives to protect the engine and improve fuel economy while simultaneously minimizing the risk to these aftertreatment systems over the lifetime of the vehicle.
