In 2015, the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

17 Sustainable Development Goals underpin the agenda. Those goals have become our guide.

In 2021 we made significant contributions in priority areas SDG 3, 12, 13 and 17. And through local engagement with the communities where we operate, we had a positive impact to some extent across all 17 goals.

Priority Goal 3 – Good health and wellbeing

Ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all, at all ages.

In 2021 we continued our industry-leading record in personal safety. It covers our contractors as well as employees.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, we took care of our employees by providing best practice hybrid work solutions, as well as workplace measures that maximised their ability to stay safe.

Priority Goal 12 – Responsible consumption and production

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.

Sustainability criteria were integrated into our new product development process in 2021, so 100% of our products can be assessed against sustainability in the future.

We have conducted sustainability assessments on 62% of our procurement spend.

Priority Goal 13 – Climate action

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impact.

We have reduced our operational carbon emissions per metric ton of product by 8.5% since 2018.

Priority Goal 17 – Partnerships

Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalise the global partnership for sustainable development.

At the end of 2021, we had 57 active projects with 17 different academic or industry partners. They spread across Europe and North America. We work with government research labs in three countries – with Isis and Diamond in the UK, ESRF in France and Nist in the US.

End poverty in all its forms everywhere.

In 2021 we helped under-privileged families in a mountainous region in central China. We donated funds towards new school uniforms for primary school children.

End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.

In Brazil we collected over 1,000 kilos of food, as well as powdered milk and blankets for families in need.

Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education, and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

In 2021 we continued to provide skills and opportunities, especially for young people.

With Covid-19, I’m so thankful I had a digital alternative. I've learned so much about the chemicals industry, Infineum and the opportunities available.

Attendee at virtual student workshop

I felt very comfortable in the Infineum team. I now want to train as an industrial manager.

Alicia, 18-year-old work experience student

A sponsorship from Infineum is a great opportunity for our students. They are well supervised. They enjoy an interesting range of projects and learn new skills.

Professor Ludivine Pidol from IFP, an engineering school we partner with in France

We do a vast range of engineering activities in the automotive industry. I can apply and develop my skills at the highest level. Infineum has a supportive culture.

Roy Saber, former IFP placement student, now a Research Engineer at Infineum

Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

We have made real progress. 29% of our senior leaders and 22% of our executive leaders are now female.

Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

Employees at our technology centre in Japan made significant water savings. They solved an issue with high water consumption when cooling a test rig. This reduced consumption by 84%.

Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

Infineum Global Headquarters in the UK is powered by 100% renewable electricity. So is our Singapore office.

At Linden Business and Technology Centre we have solar panels producing renewable electricity used on site. Further solar projects to generate renewable on-site electricity are planned for our Manufacturing sites in Cologne and Vado.

Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.

In 2021 75% of employees said Infineum is a great place to work.

Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and foster innovation.

19% of Infineum employees currently work in research and innovation.

Reduce inequalities within and among countries.

We have already met our 2025 diversity targets for non-Caucasian leaders in the UK and US, and are now considering how to stretch our ambition even further.

Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

Employees in the US took part in a community housebuilding event in New Jersey. It helped provide affordable homes for people trying to get onto the property ownership ladder.

So rewarding. It was great to know I helped build a safe place for a family to call their own.

Dena Phillips | Infineum Laboratory Supervisor | USA

Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.

Infineum two-stroke outboard engine products are designed to cause minimal harm to the aquatic environment. Toxicity and biodegradability testing support this commitment to the aquatic environment.

Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.

UK employees joined a local community hedge planting initiative and planted 400 trees. We also added 250 more trees to our ‘Infineum Forest', which is now 2,500 strong. We did this on behalf of customers, instead of sending festive cards.

Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

Infineum values integrity over profit and, even where the law is permissive, chooses the course of the highest integrity. We demand third parties and vendors do the same.
